Bonus rewards are earned by players by submitting additional threads over what is required for AC. Bonuses come in the form of Pokemon levels, game effects, plot clues, items, and canon regains (including abilities, items, and animal companions).

While threads may be submitted at any time, they must be started within the current or past month to count towards bonuses (e.g. during October, threads started in September or October may be submitted at any time, but threads started in August or earlier can no longer be turned in). In addition, each thread must have at least five comments from you. For each three threads submitted, players earn one bonus of their choice, plus one randomized bonus. Players have the option of accepting or ignoring the extra bonuses as they wish. Bonuses do not have to be played out right away, but expire by one month from the date they were received.

Restrictions:

⬥ Pokemon can gain 5 levels with each bonus, up to a maximum of 10 levels (2 bonuses) per calendar month. Note: Pokemon who were traded (eg they have a different Original Trainer) can gain a maximum of 15 levels (3 bonuses) per calendar month.
⬥ Plot clues are limited to one per calendar month and players must specify what topic they want information on.
⬥ Regaining canon abilities may need to be tiered; please discuss with a mod.

He'd better invest in some thick gardening gloves or RIP his knuckles.

Next time Akira visits the lake when the rain has let up to a light drizzle, he might catch a glimpse of the Gyarados curled up in a loose circle at the center of the lake, when something golden breaks the surface of the water- a golden Magikarp jumping several feet into the air before making a splash down back into the water. If Akira looks a little closer, he'll also see a normal red Magikarp, as well as an Azurill trying to jump out of the water by throwing its tail up into the air and pulling the rest of its body with it. It looks like the three of them are playing... The Gyarados has not noticed Akira specifically, but it is scanning the area for anybody approaching as it normally does.

Will Akira do anything and risk the Gyarados noticing him, or will he take this observation as is?

Akira's going to wait until the Gyarados is looking in another direction, then slowly lower himself into the grass. He'll keep watching for right now to see if anything new happens.

If nothing does then maybe he'll reassess.

As Akira hides himself to avoid being spotted, he'll soon come to see that it's just a rare, quiet moment for the Gyarados and the two Magikarp, and also their Azuril friend. For at least the next half hour, if Akira keeps still and quiet, the Pokemon will just continue to play in the water while Gyarados looms over them like a watch tower.

What will he do after?

Slowly Akira will stand back up again, making a point not to hide the noises. He wants the Gyarados to see him, but from a safe distance away.

The safe distance is what saves him, as well as the wish not to disturb the three playing in the water before the Gyarados, but it turns his way when it hears the noise and glares at him. It seems like it recognizes him from when he'd come with Jiro and tried to fight it, but for the time being, it does not move, waiting to see what Akira will do first.

He holds an empty hand in the air. It's a human greeting, but Pokémon understand human speech so maybe they understand body language too?

Like you would if you wanted to approach any skittish countryside critter, he makes eye contact with the Gyarados long enough to make sure he's seen, and then drops his gaze as he slowly walks forward.

If the Gyarados starts looking too agitated, he stops moving for a bit.

The Gyarados becomes noticeably tense when Akira first raises his hand, eyes darting to his hand before seeing that it's empty, and then it relaxes somewhat again. The same human body language of a hand in the air clearly means something different to it, from past experiences. It keeps an eye on Akira while he approaches, but does not move while he's still on land and not yet in the water.

Hmm. Interesting.

Akira doesn't go in the water. Instead, he sits down by the edge and beckons to the Gyarados, moving slowly and deliberately.

He doesn't want to get too close to the kids. Will Gyarados come to him?

It does not approach him, even when he beckons. From watching it on other days, Akira would have noticed that the Gyarados rarely approaches people, only chasing them away if they get too close but then turning around again once they're around fifty feet away. It seems like it doesn't want to leave the Magikarp behind unprotected, so Akira would have to either get in a boat to approach or try and communicate from shore.

He's not going to communicate from shore, because you know what that involves? Shouting. Akira's got a slightly better idea of why Gyarados responded so poorly to it before. So yeah, instead, he's going to move over to the dock and get in a boat, ssssslllllooooowwwwwwwly starting to row. Morpeko is nowhere to be seen.

Smart move on the not shouting. Approaching by boat has its own risks, but they're not immediately deadly ones. As Akira slowly rows closer to the Gyarados, it does look a little tenser, but it won't move until he gets too close. By now, he knows that 50 feet is the maximum distance he can safely be from it before it reacts violently; how far will he row?

Definitely not as close as Jiro got before, but honestly that's a guesstimate. Maybe like seventy feet?

Either way, he's just going to vibe out there, hands in his lap and off the oars. After a while, he'll dig into his bag and pull out... berries. They're supposed to be for Morpeko, but he puts one into the water, pushing it lightly in the direction of the Pokémon.

Thank you for your sacrifice, Morpeko. Gyarados watches the berries as they float closer, obviously hesitant on approaching even after they've floated a good distance away from Akira, but before it can make up its mind, the red Magikarp stops playing and starts going for the berries instead— and that prompts the Gyarados to swoop in and block its way before it can get to close to the berry- to Akira.

It makes no motion to stop Azuril from doing the exact same thing, though. This little Pokemon goes all the way up to the side of Akira's boat and bounces in the water trying to peer into his bag. Apparently it's a very very picky eater.

Inside her Pokéball, Morpeko is crying but no one can hear her.

Akira will gladly use Azurill as a demonstration though. He only has a few kinds of berries in his bag, but he'll go through them one by one, offering one of each to the leetel babey.

Occasionally he looks up to see if the Gyarados is still watching. See? This could be you.

The baby perks up when he gets to the bright pink Qualot berry. A friendship berry! also a very rare one. give give give

The Gyarados is indeed watching, and so are both Magikarp. Though it's hard to tell when the Magikarps' expression don't change from the usual O: O: It sees the berries, though, and Joonghyuk has been tossing berries to it from a distance too, so it watches Akira feed the Azuril and waits to see if he'll toss any closer here too— also keeping a close eye on his hands to make sure he isn't grabbing for a Pokeball.

You've gotta be kidding me. Fine, take the Qualot.

After Azurill gets one, Akira very casually floats a few rejects over to the Magikarp again. Will this do better?

Azuril is delighted and makes several attempts to hop into the boat with Akira, but life's hard when you have no arms.

Now that Azuril is distracted and playtime is on a pause, though, Gyarados carefully nudges the two Magikarp underwater and then approaches those berries, bringing them underwater for the two Magikarp but approaching Akira's boat in the process too.

In a normal speaking tone, at a point where Gyarados is looking at him and before it dives under, Akira will just say: "I have more, if you want them."

Not the kids, but Gyarados itself.

Gyarados' response is to lift its head up out of the water and open its mouth wide like O: toss them in here.

At least now Akira knows it can understand human speech just fine.

Here you go buddy. He doesn't know what kinds of berries Gyarados likes so he puts in some inoffensive Pecha berries.

The Pecha berries get chomped and swallowed all in one bite, before it opens its mouth for more O:

If Akira tries a handful of each type of berry one by one, he'll find that Gyarados has a preference for Persim berries! We'll never know about Qualot, since Azuril is stuffing its face with the only one.

He only has so many berries you guys, but this is the furthest he's gotten with the Gyarados like ever so take those Persim berries, buddy. He also drops some non-Persim berries into the water for the Magikarp.

With Akira's limited knowledge of Gyarados biology, does it look like this Gyarados has any scars or physical signs of damage that can't be chalked up to normal sea serpent life?

There seems to be quite a lot of signs of battle, both old scars and more recent injury. I'm going to link this investigation thread which contains more details, but it's pretty obvious by now that it's had many people battle it trying to capture it, both during its time in this lake and wherever it lived before.
